Text Entry - Java ME/MIDP Phone

Purpose

Some commands require text to be entered (Add), edited (Edit), or viewed (View). You do this using this screen.

This page describes how to input text using a standard phone keypad. If your phone has a keyboard, then change the settings so that it can be used.

The text is input using the keys 0-9. Repeatedly pressing a key will cycle through the characters associated with that key, e.g. 'a', 'b', 'c', '2' for the '2' key. Pressing another key or waiting for a short time will move to the next character, selecting Clear will delete the current character. You can also insert words from the dictionary.

Alternatively, you can use the Switch command to enter text using your phones native text input method, which may provide predictive text. If you would prefer to use your phones native text input method as the default you can do so in settings. This is recommended particularly if you are using a keyboard.

Which method is better depends on the sort of lists you use, and your phones native input method. If the lists contain the same words over and over again, which is typical of shopping lists, then the input method provided by QuickList, with its word selection could be better. If the lists consist of words that have not been used before, and your phones default method provides predictive text, it maybe better.

Key Usage

Pressing the * key displays the Word Selection screen allowing a word to be selected and inserted from the dictionary.

Pressing the # key toggles between:

  • Lowercase |abc|
  • Initial Uppercase |Abc|
  • Uppercase |ABC|
  • Numeric |123|
